STATISTICAL HISTORY OF THE FULHAM CRICKET CLUB ‘A’ GRADE

Welcome to the first instalment of the statistical history and summary of the ‘A’ Grade teams of the Fulham Cricket Club starting from 1959/60.

As always with an attempt to commence such a history, there are a number of difficulties to be overcome. Missing records, overlapping careers, changes to the numbers of balls in an over and changes to the numbers of overs bowled in an innings are just a few, but we’ll attempt to deal with each of these as they occurred.

The 1959/60 season is the starting point simply because that season is the earliest full scorebook record we have. Some details from the previous few seasons are available through Annual Reports and the like and we have used these details for a few selected players.

It needs to be stated at the outset that 1959/60 and the subsequent seasons saw the twilight of the careers of some of Fulham’s great players such as Keith Webb, Keith Tucker and others. Their careers are better covered in the book “Fulham Cricket Club – A Club History”, written by Rob Ashby, Craig Bignell and Lee Harradine, published in 1999, and the following figures therefore do no justice to their stellar careers with Fulham.

Some players, however, had only recently started their Fulham careers and went on to become some of our greats, or had brief stints with Fulham that couldn’t be ignored. These players included Keith Tilley, Ray Hank, Tom Curnow, Milton Curnow and Geoff Williams. As it was necessary to calculate their performances to that time from the records available, the following figures were used.

Batting

Keith Tilley: (started 1954/55)

41 games, 44 innings, 0 not outs, 1009 runs, 22.9 average, HS 100+ in 1954/55.

Ray Hank (started 1957/58)

16 games, 16 innings, 2 not outs, 790 runs, 56.4 average, 110 no & 100 in 1957/58.

Tom Curnow (started 1957/58)

1957/58 not available

9 games, 9 innings, 0 not outs, 601 runs, 66.8 average, HS 100+ in 1958/59

Milton Curnow (started 1957/58)

16 games, 16 innings, 0 not outs, 440 runs, 27.5 average, HS 89no in 1957/58.

Geoff Williams (started 1956/57)

(Estimated figures)

25 games, 25 innings, 0 not outs, 500 runs, 20.0 average.

Bowling

Keith Tilley

160 overs, 11 maidens, 61 wickets, 542 runs, 8.9 average.

Milton Curnow

100 overs, 3 maidens, 36 wickets, 429 runs, 11.9 average.

Tom Curnow

42 overs, 1 maiden, 14 wickets, 167 runs, 11.9 average.

These figures are necessary as a starting point for the above outstanding players. Keith Tilley and Milton Curnow are Life members of the Club and went on to give our Club long and successful careers.

From this point on, we will give each season’s figures in a tabular format, with cumulative career figures and a brief description of the season, together with some commentary about as many players as possible. As each season goes by, we hope you will gain a better understanding and enjoyment of the history of the Club over this period.

Figures for 1959/60 will be posted soon.
