Fulham Cricket Club LOD’s Premiership Win 2007/2008
Read all about the big win here
As the new season is almost upon us, it is time to reflect on last season’s premiership win.
But before we go into that we need to make mention that a premiership is not just a win on the last Saturday of the cricket season. For us it has been the culmination of three seasons of hard work.
Over the past three years it is fair to say that 95% of the senior list and a fair amount of Under 17’s and Junior’s have contributed to the success of the One Day Squad.
Having said that lets focus on the game at hand. A 40 degree day at Grange No 1 Oval started off well by us losing the toss and we were asked to field. Alex Armour and Omo opened the attack. Alex made the first breakthrough in the fourth over clean bowling the batsman with the score 1/4 after 4 overs. Grange then settled in for a 47 run partnership between Blades and Haller (Haller being the Association leading run scorer for our Grade). The partnership was broken up when Ozzie found the inside edge of Blade’s bat and a magnificent catch was taken down leg side by Wicketkeeper Chook.
Haller was the next to fall, a beautiful off-spinner by Hutto beat him neck and crop. The score was 3/66 after 22 overs. This was a turning point of the game, our bowling and fielding really lifted to another level. The next seven wickets fell for 46 runs within 16 overs. Our bowling figures were:
Omo 0/12 off 5 overs
Alex 3/29 off 8 overs
Way 1/17 off 9 overs
Hutto 2/24 off 7 overs
Ozzie 4/24 off 8.4 overs (Star Bowler)
Our Wonderful Innings
Second ball of the first over, Mick Brister played a beautiful shot to the boundary, third ball of the over, Mick was in the change rooms having a shower. After the second over Rohan was right behind him. 2/6 and things were looking pretty grim. PJ and Kristian consolidated the innings for a while until PJ was finally dismissed after 15 overs for a duck (joining Brister and Rohan in the shower).
Kristian at this stage was 42 not out. Next came Chook and three overs later, Chook was in the shower with Brister, Rohan and PJ for a duck. Kristian was 51 not out. Hutto was next in and stopped the run of ducks (or so we thought). Kristian and Hutto put on a valuable 21 run partnership before he was caught for 6 runs. Kristian was 62 not out. Dave Poll was next in and next out. His Superman jocks didn’t help him and he was soon in the shower with the others having scored a duck. Then Ozzie and Kristian combined to guide us to a premiership victory with their 26 run partnership, including Ozzie’s 6 to win the match in the 31st over. Without Kristian’s determined 74 not out we would have really struggled to reach the required total. His innings was quite inspirational.
We would like to thank the Club Cheersquad for all the support we received from the boundary line on the day. It was invaluable. Also a special thank to Dave and Alison Poll for the after party. A good time was had by all.
We look forward now to a successful 2008/2009 Season.
Cheers
James (Chook) Tilbrook
